Rice Terraces

I crouched in the long grass at the edge of the terraces so that the first stalks would blur across the bottom of the frame. Behind them the steps of rice run up to a ridge with two palms and a couple of huts.

These terraces are watered by subak, a shared irrigation system run by the farmers themselves for about a thousand years. From the path it looks like landscape; up close every level is somebody’s field.
