The Sassi

I photographed the people looking at the view as much as the view itself. Three strangers on a wall, and in front of them the Sassi, the old cave district of Matera, stacked up the slope in pale stone.

People have lived in these caves for thousands of years. In the 1950s the residents were moved out; now the houses are lived in again, and the town is a UNESCO site.
